Her Story

Lila Holley is a combat Veteran and retired US Army Chief Warrant Officer Four. She is the multiple award-winning, Amazon bestselling visionary author behind the Camouflaged Sisters book series.

In her books, Lila partners with other courageous military women and women Veterans to share their stories of success in the military despite facing challenges along their journey. Lila is on a mission to empower military women and women Veterans to take back the narrative and ownership of their stories. She believes there is no one better to tell these stories than the women who lived them.

I served 22 years in the US Army. I had a wonderful career, served with some amazing leaders and Soldiers who inspired me. I was ready for retirement. It was time to move on, do something else, and spend more time with my family.

Transitioning from the military was quite the emotional journey. It really caught me off guard and I struggled with depression. I knew something was wrong when I began to exhibit anger issues. I needed help.

I began to journal. This really helped me process the emotions I struggled with. I looked for help in books but was unable to find any that addressed the ‘emotions’ of transitioning from the military.

With the help of the VA Mental Health services and my writing I began to make progress through my transition.

I began to think about other Veterans who could be struggling with their emotions during transition and I decided to turn my writings and lessons learned into a book to help others. That’s when I self published Battle Buddy: Maneuvering the Battlefield of Transitioning form the Military.

I had the bug! Because writing was so therapeutic for me I decided to write a book sharing the stories of military women. And so Camouflaged Sisters was birthed! Our first book is released Veterans Day 2015 – Camouflaged Sisters: Revealing Struggles of the Black Woman’s Military Experience.

During this time, I realized that military women have incredible stories of their military service. Where were the books filled with our stories? Who was telling that story? Who better to tell than the ones who lived it…

There were no books out like Camouflaged Sisters. This book captured the experience of the military women in her own voice. People wanted to know what we had to say! @BlackGirlsROCK even congratulated us on the release of our groundbreaking book!

The book touched a lot of military women. These are stories they can relate to, these are their stories! So much love and encouragement were shown to me as I traveled the country spreading the stories of courageous military women.

  • The Second Time

I knew we had to do it again and presented the idea of Camouflaged Sisters: Silent No More to my publisher Purposely Created Publishing team. I called it our healing project.

I really felt like I was on to something because our work was being noticed. I took home the win at the Indie Authors Legacy Awards as Literary Trailblazer of the Year!

Silent No More truly tackled some tough topics and tugged at the heartstrings of those who wrote and read the book. There is a way to tell these stories that help others to heal and we’ve figured that out with this book.

There is so much that goes into being a woman in the military. I wanted people to know, ‘No, it’s not that easy for a mother to just leave her child and go off to war.’ We had to share the stories ‘Behind the Rank’.

I truly feel like I am walking in my life’s purpose using my gift of storytelling as I lead my next book project with 16 coauthors set to release in Spring 2018, expand Camouflaged Sisters radio platform, launch another edition of our online magazine, and create additional opportunities for military women to share their incredible stories!

Behind The Rank

A combination of heartfelt stories, soul-baring admissions, and valuable advice, Behind the Rank, Volume 1 is a collection of powerful voices, calling out to every woman Veteran and service member. Each having faced the pressures of being a wife, a mother, a sister, and a friend, all while serving their country, Lila Holley and twenty-nine women come together to impart knowledge, guidance, and compassion to support the women leaders who are now serving behind them.

Camouflaged Sisters

Camouflaged Sisters chronicles the courageous path of fourteen women who overcame various internal and external struggles during their military careers. These veterans give open accounts of how they adapted, achieved work-life balance, relied on their faith, and used mentorship as a vital tool in their success pre- and post-military career.

Silent No More

In Camouflaged Sisters: Silent No More, twelve women strip away all comfort and protection to share the struggles they’ve faced, not on the battlefield, but instead in places they never expected—in their homes, in their barracks, amongst friends. These are the stories of sexual trauma, domestic violence, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many other dangerous challenges women in the military fight every day.
